Burnet: Sanguisorba spOther names: Sitka burnet. A simple analysis of the Latin root of this herb gives a bit of indication as to the use of this plant in medicine. ‘Sanguis’ (blood) and ‘sorbeo’ (to staunch). Thus, it is used to stop bleeding. Medicinal Use: The most common use of the burnets are for their ability to stop bleeding. They are a very astringent and thus used for internal and external bleeding. They can also be juiced to help with diarrhea and varicose veins. Food use: The traditionally used burnet is S. minor. Its used as a great addition to salads, soups and casseroles. Apparently, the wild species aren’t nearly as tasty as S. minor, but can be used in the same way. |
