Burnet:
Sanguisorba sp
Other names: Sitka burnet.
A simple analysis of the Latin root of this herb gives a bit of indication
as to the use of this plant in medicine. ‘Sanguis’
(blood) and ‘sorbeo’ (to staunch). Thus, it is used
to stop bleeding.
Medicinal Use: The most common use of the burnets are for their ability
to stop bleeding. They are a very astringent and thus used for internal
and external bleeding. They can also be juiced to help with diarrhea and
varicose veins.
Food use: The traditionally used burnet is S. minor. Its used
as a great addition to salads, soups and casseroles. Apparently, the wild
species aren’t nearly as tasty as S. minor, but can be
used in the same way.
