House
Finch
(Carpodacus mexicanus)
Also known as the Linnet or Papayabird, it was introduced from California
in 1870. It's most common in disturbed habitat such as in cities. They
form large flocks when they are not breeding.
When they're breeding (February to August), 3-5 greenish-blue speckled
eggs are laid.
Interesting Facts:
There are two color varieties seen in Honolulu that are rarely witnessed
in the finch’s natural range- red head and yellow. The yellow head
is a result of physiological stress and improper diet. While these birds
appear to be doing okay, the population is obviously not as healthy as
they seem.
