The
Study Site: Goby Bay, Coconut Island, Oahu, HI:
The Hawaiian Islands are made up of 132 rocks, reefs, and atolls. Oahu
lies less than 200 miles from the South-eastern edge of the chain. On
the exposed Northeastern side of the island is Kaneohe Bay. Inside the
bay reefs on the outer edge protect the bay from large oceanic waves.
Wind waves can still mix up silty muddy sediments except in a few areas
that have land protecting them to the northeast. One such place is Goby
Bay on Coconut Island. This bay is like glass for most of the year. Only
during a rare few Kona storms does the bay recieve any waves at all. The
result is a perfect habitat for the Hawaiian Shrimp Goby (Psilogobius
mainlandi) and its commensual snapping shrimp (Alpheus sp).
