Portlock is my favorite
shoreline cliff area on Oahu. Its a place that never has very many people.
Its pretty difficult to find as its tucked away off the main Highway in
the housing devolepments near Hawai'i Kai.
The shoreline of Portlock is made up of tuff material (compacted ash)
from the explosive eruption of the tuff cone that created Hanauma Bay.
Portlock, is on the outide edge of the crater while Hanauma Bay is within
the crater. This of course makes Portlock very exposed to wave action
and thus, a fairly dangerous place to swim. But for advanced swimmers
and divers, its a great place to dive. The water when you jump in is already
about 25 feet deep. The bottom is full of rock-boring sea urchins, Pocillopora
corals, and moray eels.
