Chickweed: Stellaria sp

Other names: Winterweed

Chickweed is an introduced weed that is one of the most prolific garden pests. Yet, the good thing about this pest is that you can harvest it to make a very delicious treat. The Romans considered this plant the “elixir of life”. I might not got that far, but I do know that eating the leaves fresh from a nearby gardens, reminds me of eating nice salad greens. In many senses this is the most common use of the plant.

Medicinal Uses: Chickweed is a demulcent herb, meaning that it is used to sooth irritated tissue. Thus, ulcers, bladder, and urinary difficulties can be remedied when mixing up a tea from this plant. My favorite use comes from a recommendation from the California School of Herbal Studies. Apparently, women with sore nipples should mix this plant with honey and apply to the sore areas.

Food uses: Not only do chickens like this plant, but it’s a great plant for human consumption as well. In fact, its been commonly used in salads and soups.
